Understand why both Jokers belong to the selected trump suit, how they rank, when they become legal, how they sort, and why they cannot be plucked.
5 minute read · Updated July 24, 2026Jokers belong to the selected suit
Once the dealer calls trump, both Jokers become members of that suit for the entire hand. They are not a fifth suit and they are never suitless. Big Joker is the highest trump, Little Joker is second, then Ace through Two in the selected suit.
- Big Joker — highest trump
- Little Joker — second-highest trump
- Ace of trump — third-highest trump
- Then King, Queen, Jack, and downward
Where Jokers appear in your hand
The hand groups trump on the left as soon as trump is selected. Big Joker and Little Joker appear first in that group, immediately before the suited trump cards. This makes the effective suit and rank visible instead of forcing players to remember a hidden exception.
Trump must be broken
A Joker cannot be led while trump is unbroken. Trump becomes broken when a player who cannot follow a non-trump lead cuts with trump. If Clubs is trump, the mandatory opening Two of Clubs lead breaks trump immediately. If a player holds only trump, they may lead it.
After trump is broken, a Joker follows normal trump rules. If trump is led and you hold a Joker, it counts as following suit. If a non-trump suit is led and you hold that suit, you must follow it instead of playing the Joker.
Jokers are protected from plucks
Pluck exchanges occur only after the dealer locks trump. Every card in the selected trump suit is protected, including Big Joker and Little Joker. An offered card must be non-trump, and it can only retrieve a non-trump card of its printed suit.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Joker be played before trump is broken?
No, unless the player has only trump remaining. Jokers are trump and use the same break restriction.
Must I play a Joker when trump is led?
You must follow trump if you have any trump card. You may choose among your legal trump cards; the Joker is not automatically forced.
Can a Joker be stolen in a pluck?
No. Both Jokers are members of the protected trump suit.
